I was recently granted a sort of miraculous gift. In talking with the fine folks at Owen Roe Winery about their December Wine reveals and that program, I got to talk with an awesome winery ambassador named Greg. He volunteered to bring me some of their wines that were EOD that I might try them out.
2014 Yakima Valley Riesling DuBrul Vineyards – The first thing I noticed was a distinct acetyl, petrol-like aroma. I have heard from many experts this is a desirable smell, that it is an indicator of the Alsatian style of fermenting. For me, not so much. It also continued with an aroma that was more floral and less fruit. The mid palate is quite dry, though creamy texture and mouthfeel. I got some hints of pineapple and wet stone flavors.
2016 Ex Umbris Syrah – This is REALLY the one I wanted to sample. I was greeted by a deep purple color, very vibrant. The aromas had a bit of chocolate and robust plum and dark cherry. The mid palate begins very silky with nicely integrated tannins and it finishes a bit dry. The info on their website suggested decanting this wine for a couple of hours. So I’m going to try that and see what changes I notice.
2016 Red Willow Vineyard Sangiovese – A deep garnet color and dark fruit aromas greeted me on this one. Flavors of cherry and strawberry nestled prominently on the silky tannins. The finish on this was superb. Can only imagine what a few years of bottle aging will do for it.
2014 Yakima Valley Red Wine – This blend is 51% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It begins with aromas of blue fruit and violets. What follows is a satiny mid palate, fruit flavors that continued on from the promise and a bit of baking spice. The tannins were a bit more prominent and completed with a dry finish. To me, this wine needed a bit more flavor in the middle and would definitely benefit from some time laying down. Give it 2 or 3 yrs and this should show nicely.
