2016 Colagrossi Red Wine

First shipment from a new wine club.

We were fortunate enough to visit with Craig and Diane at Colagrossi Wines last August via my cousin and enjoyed their wines so much we HAD to join the club.  At that same time, and I have blogged about this during our Sonoma trip, we got to barrel taste a grape I’d never heard of before.

Ciliegiolo is a variety of red wine grape from Italy, named after the Italian for ‘cherry’. It is a minor component of traditional blends such as Chianti.  When Craig introduced us to this wine I was intrigued.  Though the middle was lacking structure, both ends were really nice.  He let us know he was experimenting with adding 5-10% Sangiovese to add that structure.  He created a sample and let us try that . . .WOW.  And that “experiment” is what his 2016 Red Wine is all about.  . . . 95% Ciliegiolo and 5% Sangiovese.

The color is garnet with aromas of dark cherries and berries.  The mid palate is soft and silky with great carry through of those dark fruits along with some baking spices.  The finish is long and lingering with a slight bit of pepper.  I opened this bottle one day and had some impressions.  Corked it up and waited until the next day.  The second day was even better and is where I got my notes.  Decanting this lovely for just a bit will definitely allow it to open beautifully.  Cheers!
