Redhawk Winery

On Saturday 9/15/18, while my wife was enjoying her time with her best friend, I decided to visit a few small wineries in West Salem.  There are quite a plethora, so deciding on where to start was tough.  While researching, I discovered one that had the kind of diversity of options I was seeking.  Redhawk is a small family owned winery that not only produces fine single varietals, but some pretty nice blends as well.

2017 Pinot Gris

From the floral green apple and lime aromas, to the crisp pear and lemon flavors, this is a vibrant, racy offering with ample acidity.

Clear with a touch of gold

The citrus and green apple flavors are nicely prominent in the nose

The texture and acidity are nearly perfect.  The fruit flavors come shining through really well.

I’m not typically much of a Pinot Gris fan. . .but this could turn me.

2016 Chardonnay

A medium bodied, crisp wine with prominent apricot and peach aromas and flavors. The balanced acidity carries the underlying hints of granite through the finish. (90% Stainless Steel, 10% New French Oak).

 Gorgeous golden hues

 Stone fruit are quite prominent

The texture and acidity are nearly perfect.  The fruit flavors come shining through really well once again.

This one surprised me.  Very luscious aromas and fruit throughout as well as a great finish.

2017 Riesling

Sourced from our one acre block planted in 1978, this is a vibrant and crisp wine with intense flavors of lemon-lime, pear and kiwi. There is an underlying hint of sweet citrus throughout the finish.

Clear as melted snow with great viscosity.

Right off I got a slight petrol smell, which I am told is desirable in a Riesling . . .not for me so much.  Under that I also got some pretty great bright fruit.

Really pronounced citrus flavors of lemon and some pear.  Not sweet, but it gives the impression of sweetness due to the pronounced fruit profile.

A really nice fruit-forward light choice.  Recommended.

2015 Grateful Red

This is one of their Signature wines. . one of the things that drew me in . . . “A pretty wine showing bright cherry and raspberry notes with background hints of slate. Our most popular wine is always a great value.”

Medium bodied and bright ruby color

Not much aroma, for me.  Very mild.

Nice medium body, more spice than fruit really.  The dark fruits are there but not coming out to play.  There is also a slight flavor of cedar and slate.

A little disappointing.  I was really wanting to love this.

2016 Estate Pinot Noir

“A structured and expressive wine with notes of candied apple and baking spice aromas and layers of strawberry and cherry flavors. Hints of toast and graphite throughout.”

 Medium bodied and light garnet

Light aromas of red fruit like raspberry and cherry.

Nice medium body and a great composite of fruit flavors.  Really enjoyable and a great finish.

Things are beginning to pick up with these reds.

2016 Vintner’s Reserve Pinot Noir

“A beautiful, robust, and full-bodied wine with mouth coating cherry, currant, and black fruit throughout. This wine will benefit from time in the bottle. ”

 Medium bodied and light garnet

Light aromas of red fruit like raspberry, cherry and a hint of leather

More light bodied and what I would classify as Elegant.  Not robust, but all the elements are there, finely integrated together.

 Soft and more refined . . .

2016 Redhawk Red

“An enticing candied black cherry and plum nose, lead to layers of blackberry and dried strawberry flavors and hints of Cassis. Structured and balanced, this blend is perfect with hearty stews and grilled meats.
66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Mourvedre”

 Medium bodied and dark

Initial aromas are of dark candy, in the best sense.  Ripe plums and dark cherries are prominent.

Luscious texture . . Super silky with a perfect balance.  I found my favorite.

I had to take one of these home.

2016 Mourvedre

“The spicy white pepper nose is followed by layers of dark spiced plum, candied apple, dried black cherry and hints of clove throughout. A big, juicy mouthful of flavors. Great for summer BBQ’s.”

Medium-heavy bodied and dark.  Great legs

Gorgeous dark fruit aromas accompanied by baking spices.  Luxurious.

Excellent silky mid palate and a superb structure.  The fruit flavors carry over from the aromas expertly.  I found another favorite.

I had to take one of these home as well.

I highly recommend Redhawk Winery for your next foray into the Eola – Amity Hills AVA.  It will be well worth your time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
