First Taste Oregon 2019

My wife was busy with her BFF, so I had the afternoon to myself. I was really surprised at the diversity of the participants from around the state. I got to visit some old friends and discover some new ones.

I started with August Cellars . .

2016 Zinfandel – Milton Freewater – Full fruit aromas . . .Solid texture and great fruit on the palate with a substantial amount of spice.

2008 Marechal Foch – Slightly wild dried fruit flavors . . .

Cathedral Ridge

2016 Necessity Red – 60% Pinot Noir / 40% Zinfandel – Very bold fruity nose . . .Silky and bursting with dark fruit flavors . . .Super nice!!

2015 Barbera – Bold fruit nose . .Super smooth and very fruit forward . . Excellent balance . . .Leans a bit to acid but would really complement food.

2014 Rusty Red – 90% Syrah / 10% Zinfandel – Would be great with food. . .Satiny smooth with a bit of spice. . .Very easy drinker.

2015 The Daughters Reserve – 55% Mourvedre / 35% Grenache / 10% Malbec – Mild nose but a Roller Coaster on the palate . . Fruit—Earth—Spice—Fruit . . . Very smooth and a great lingering finish.

Foon Estate

2015 Albarino – Stone fruit . . Crisp and Clean

2015 Viognier – Tight acidity . . .Nice honeysuckle flavor . . .A nice palate cleanser

2014 Tempranillo – Smoked gouda nose which carries onto the palate . . great structure . . a bit tannic

2015 Malbec – Plum and forest on the nose . . Mouth filling flavors with lower tannins . .Quite robust.

Cardwell Hill Cellars

2014 Pommard Pinot Noir – Nice dark and red fruit . . .Spice anf fruit on the palate . .Nice balance and complexity

2015 Old Vines Pinot Noir – A robust dark fruit nose . . .Cedar and hints of dried fruit

2014 Monet Block Pinot Noir – smell of roses . . Very nicely integrated . . Well balanced with great fruit with a hint of forest on the finish.

 

Chris James Cellars

2017 Cuvee Blanc – Tight flavors, stone fruit aromas . .White peach and apricot.  Gorgeous texture and flavors.

2016 Pinot Noir Reserve – BEST OF SHOW . And I am NOT surprised. . . .Gorgeous nose of dark and red fruit.  Superb structure, very excellent balance.  Flavors are robust.

 

Bluebird Hill Cellars

2017 Rose’ of Pinot Noir – Bright acidity and a solid structure. . .Would make a great food wine.

2016 Walnut Ridge Reserve Pinot Noir – Mild nose . . can’t catch the fruit.  But the flavors really come thru.  Dark and red fruit prominent.  Lots od spice.  Very solid structure. . a very nice Pinot.

2016 Red Wine Blend – 60% Syrah / 40% Pinot Noir – Great table wine. . .beautiful fruit aromas and a solid silky texture.

 

La Chouette Vineyard

2017 Rose’ of Pinot Noir – Bright and crisp . . .Strawberry and apple aromas and flavors . . Very nice structure.

2015 Pinot Noir – Gorgeous nose . .Spice and fruit on the mid palate. . .texture is exquisite. . .very silky.

 

Scarlet Oak Barrels

This winery is out in Pendleton.

2016 Semillon – Crisp and clean . .with a touch of grassiness.  bright acidity . . .No definitive fruit flavors . .

2017 Idiosyncratic Red – Syrah Rose’ . . .Gorgeous nose . . .Solid fruit flavors . .nice and bright as well.Loads of flavor . . .Great food wine.

2014 Malbec – Mild nose . . Great full fruit flavors however . . .and really bold.  Silky texture.

2014 Petit Verdot – 93% PV / 7% Sangiovese – Full blast of fruit on the nose . . .A little more acidity than expected . . .and a nice silky structure.

2014 Sangiovese – Vanilla scent. . like a sugar cookie . .Super silky and great texture . . .Spicy and wonderful with a round finish.

Red Blend – 45% Sangiovese / 29% PV / 26% Malbec – A great Sangio nose . .solid structure though no distinct fruit flavors . . though that could be End of day palate talking . . a hint of dark chocolate . . .a great table wine.
